Each year, Earth Day falls on April 22nd, honoring and raising awareness for the environmental protection of our planet’s natural resources for future generations. 

This Earth Day, go green and give back by attending a number of great events in Downtown Tacoma.

Join a Downtown Tacoma Clean-Up

On Saturday, April 22nd, join Litter Free 253 as their organization rallies the community for a city-wide clean-up. Downtown Tacoma’s clean-up event will kick off from the Tacoma Art Museum parking lot from 9am – 11am. Be sure to register online ahead of time to get your very own litter grabber. Supplies, trash bags, protective gloves, and Litter Free 253 swag will be provided on-site. 

Tacoma Art Museum is located at 1701 Pacific Avenue.

15 Annual South Sound Sustainability Expo 

The South Sound Sustainability Expo is the region’s largest community event celebrating all things environmental sustainability. Join this free, family-friendly event for their 15th year as you take part in fun activities, art exhibits, presentations, performances and more in Downtown Tacoma. 

Explore the expo’s exciting vendors, Pop-Up Forest, test out e-scooters and bikes, check out the Tacoma Farmers Mobile Market, kid’s corner and much more. The Sustainability Expo will take place from 10am – 3pm along downtown’s Tollefson Plaza and UW Tacoma campus.

Bike to the Sustainability Expo with Downtown: On the Go!

Did you know that driving has a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions? This Earth  Day, go green and get geared up to ride your bike to hit the expo in zero carbon style with Downtown: On the Go for their annual community ride. Enjoy the company of Tacoma City Council Members as you ride from City Hall to the expo, commuting in sustainable fashion. 

Downtown: On the Go is dedicated to ensuring that Tacoma is a city that is focussed on safety and accessibility, while helping make it more convenient to walk, bike or bus in place of using vehicles for all trips. 

Registration is required and participants will meet at 747 Market St. at 11:45am and depart for the expo at 12pm. Learn more here!

Catch a Free Pierce Transit Ride 

Enjoy a fare-free public transit rides on April 22nd as Pierce Transit celebrates Earth Day. 

Free rides will be valid on regularly scheduled Pierce Transit fixed route bus service, shuttle paratransit, and on-demand Runner services. You can even catch a ride to the Sustainability Expo!

Volunteer at UW Tacoma’s Giving Garden

Join UW Tacoma as they paint a student-designed mural in their Giving Garden and help lend a hand as they add new plants, sow seeds, and participate in some garden spring cleaning. 

The UW Tacoma Giving Garden is located at the corner of S. 12th and Fawcett Avenue.

Join the Earth Day After Party at 7 Seas Brewing

After the South Sound Sustainability Expo, head to the after party at 7 Seas Brewing where you can keep the Earth Day celebration going as you mix and mingle with Tacoma Environmental Services, Communities for a Healthy Bay, Sustainability Expo organizers, vendors, volunteers, and neighbors. 

Join the After Party from 4pm – 6pm at 7 Seas Brewing’s downtown taproom located at 2101 Jefferson Avenue.
