As of September 1st, free transit rides and passes are now available for riders ages 18 and under thanks to Move Ahead Washington, a statewide transportation funding package that was passed earlier this year.

Under the new law, youth riders are now eligible to ride all Puget Sound transit agencies at no cost, while ultimately being introduced to the freedom of using public transportation and gaining access to get to school easier, meet up with friends, go to work, and much more.

How Does it Work?

All you need is your student ID or free Youth Orca Card, which can be ordered online or acquired in-person in order to ride buses, shuttles, light rails, and other modes of public transportation from various agencies throughout the Puget Sound.

Don’t have a student ID or Orca Card? Don’t worry, youth will not be denied ridership due to lack of identification through the end of 2022.

Beginning in 2023, youth will be directed to get a Free Youth Transit Pass that allows them to simply tap their card, or eventually use their smartphone, in order to access free transit across the region.

Youth Can Now Ride Free of Charge On:

  • Pierce Transit
  • Sound Transit
  • King County Metro
  • King County Water Taxis
  • Kitsap Transit
  • Kitsap Ferries (Starting October 1st, 2022)
